REMEMBERING 9/11

Remembering 9/11. I awoke to the phone ringing."Are you okay, turn on the TV, the Twin Towers are on fire." I watched it on TV, watched as the two towers crumble one by one. I did not know what to make of what was going on at that point, did not realize that thousands of people died. I lived on the corner of Prince and Elizabeth, I ran up to the roof of my building and watched the plume of smoke cover the sun, the smoke coming from where I would normally see the Twin Towers. These pictures I took that day and the following days after the attack stayed in a box on my shelf. I never looked at them for years until this morning. Last week an elite group of men and women graduated to become San Francisco City Firefighters. 5000 applications were submitted for 35 positions. It was the first graduation in five years. And one that felt especially poignant given the loss of two firefighters from station 26 back in June. Congratulations to the graduates, especially #1073.

In researching what I want to discuss at the opening I came across a couple of statics that show exactly why single use Plastics are so bad for our Oceans and our world. Between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed each year. 1 million bags are thrown away every minute. And about 200 billion water bottles are consumed annually or 5,000 a second. *There needs to be a cultural shift in the way we think about plastic. Every piece of plastic that has made it into the ocean in the past 50 years is still out there somewhere. - Brown

Nutria and Moonshine

156 hours spent sweating my A...off in mosquito, water moccasin, gator, infested swamps of Louisiana. Never been so hot in my life. 102 degrees at it's peak. And a hunter who couldn't bag a Nutria no matter how large the bag. The Nutria rejoice!

Day 7 (departure day)
9am. Check a trap that our "hunter" has set incorrectly...No Nutria
10am. Leave our "hunter" and Baton Rouge in the dust and drive full tilt to Saint Bernard Parish south of New Orleans. Our Craigslist listing has provided.
11:45am. Meet Ray, Raymond and Martin at their home.
1pm. Nutria bagged
2pm. Lunch - Nutria, peas and rice served with a side of Moonshine & Cherry Kool-Aid
3pm. Race for the Airport and check in en route
4pm. Gallop to my gate

I landed in the afternoon and within minutes was enveloped in heat and humidity that reminded me of exactly where I was...New Orleans. Street jazz, sunshine, painted faces, the Royal street wine stroll, galleries, lightening and thunder, the buzz on Bourbon street, the sky opens up, a man showers in the rain falling from an overflowing gutter, turtle soup, Muriel's restaurant, a table next to Vince Vaughn...can this possibly get better. -brown

EASTER ISLAND, HANGA ROA

Easter Island is one of the most isolated inhabited places on the planet. It sits about halfway between the Chilean coast and Tahiti and somehow many many thousands of moons ago a crew of intrepid Polynesians tested their skills and sailed into the Pacific in search of something else. What they found would later become known as the Southeastern most point of the Polynesian triangle, Easter Island. Today travelers come from far and wide specifically to see the Moai. The monolithic stone sculptures that were carved in a quarry called Rano Raraku and then were transported to their final platforms upwards of 12 miles away. The largest Moai that made it to a platform was 86 tons. Each village had a platform and on it sat the living faces of deified chiefs. Getting them to the platforms today remains a mystery. But the general consensus is that they were moved standing straight upright. In a sense the Moai walked themselves to their platforms and in doing so they proved that they were worthy of representing the chiefs they were meant to become. If a Moai fell during transport it was abandoned and a new one was carved. The remarkable thing about this area is that you can see all phases of the archaeology. You see where the Moai were carved, the routes where they were transported and the finished platforms. I found myself admiring them for hours trying to piece together how and why this civilization spent so much of its energy on this undertaking. Easter Island is an open walled museum. Everywhere I stepped I felt the history beneath my feet.

Journalists in the Philippines are often targeted by powerful people who want to silence them, especially journalists who report on heated political and environmental issues. On Jan 24, 2011 days before my arrival in Palawan, prominent news anchor and commentator with dwAR Dr. Gerry Ortega was gunned down in the San Pedro district of Puerto Princessa City. It happened in front of the clothing store in the above photo. Ortega had just left his weekly radio show titiled, "RAMARAK" aka "Rapid Fire". It was a show designed to speak truthfully about his concerns regarding corruption, government spending, mining and logging. Ortega reportedly was investigating where and how the government was spending money made from local mining operations. The gunman Marlon de Camata aka Marvin Alcaraz was hired from Taguig City to kill the broadcaster for approximately $3500USD. Following the killing and his fortunately quick capture Alcaraz relinquished information that led to the arrest of ten individuals, including former high officials of Palawan and Marinduque provinces.

For me, the real conversation is not the details of this particular slaying, but in the words of IFJ Asia-Pacific Director Jacqueline Park, “this brutal attack is an affront to free speech and press freedom in an already restrictive environment of government control." Our world has become a very dangerous place to speak out. And it is happening not only in the Philippines, but in Mexico, Cairo, Vietnam, Iran and beyond. I commend individuals such as Gerry, who take the known risk to talk about the truth in a country where money rules all. He was willing to risk everything to bring the facts to the people through his radio program. After spending 2 weeks in Palawan I can say that Gerry Ortega is a household name. Love him or hate his cause, everyone knows who he is and knows what he fought for. His death made his cause stronger and it will hopefully help in the reduction of widespread corruption.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said that 142 journalists had been murdered since the fall of dictator Ferdinand Marcos and the restoration of democracy in 1986. -- AFP

INTERSECTION GIVES BACK

Brown and Cedric are committed to giving back to the places they photograph. They are proud to announce that INTERSECTION will be donating a percentage of all sales to the people who have trusted them in front of the camera and to the places that have enriched their imagery.

The first official INTERSECTION donation was given last week to the Batak Village on the island of Palawan in the Philippines. Slash and burn farming has recently been banned on the island of Palawan. This is a positive in most cases as it minimizes deforestation. However, the Batak people have survived off of this type of farming to provide enough rice for their people for decades. With this new policy they are no longer able to grow enough food. They are being displaced, and their culture is at risk of disappearing.

The INTERSECTION donation is to help begin a banana tree planting project. Mature banana trees are plentiful with fruit and while they will not erase the need to produce rice, the project will make the production of necessary rice stock more manageable. In addition, the Batak people will be able to sell bananas to help buy rice when in need. We will be updated periodically and will keep you posted on the progress of the project.

The Batak is comprised of 5 settlements and has a population of approximately 351 people. This photograph is the chief of the settlement in Kalakuasan.

The Dubai to NYC flight offers plenty of time to reflect on a trip. One thing that struck me the most about Mauritius is that it is one of 4 or 5 countries in the world without a military. Given that approximately 23% of fiscal spending in the USA (782 Billion Dollars) in 2009 went to Defense, it has to make you think. Mauritius has a plan for it's future. It is using the money that it doesn't spend on the military to improve education, transportation, health care, social welfare and culture. They are positioned to quickly create wealth and a higher standard of living. One thing that I appreciate about the Mauritians is that most are tolerant and accepting of each others differences. I went to a Hindu wedding dinner tonight and found that among those attending, religions differed between Catholic, Muslim, Hindu and Christian. Day 2 on Mauritius

It seems that most people on Mauritius enjoy the water experience. On Ile aux Cerfs, a small neighboring island, many local Mauritian families come to picnic and swim. I should mention that on this island a local man told us he had never seen an American before and asked if we lived near Madonna. Apparently the man had a crush. I flew the behemoth A-380 from NYC to Dubai. This Emirates plane was incredible. It had a double decker configuration with a wingspan of 261.8 feet. Think about that the next time you go to a football game. The downstairs compartment had 89 rows many of which are 10 seats across and can seat a max of 850.

I had one thing going for me. I could have out run everyone in my group if it came down to that. Our guide referred to these Grizzly Bears as very scary cows. They were in a grazing pattern awaiting the arrival of the Salmon that were due in anytime. This medium sized female was around 450 lbs. The large and in charge males can top 1500 lbs.

This is a road trip to a country that have always fascinated me. I was commissioned by a magazine to be there, to look and come back with pictures. Memories of Iran pieced together through images. I wanted to photograph everyone and everything that I saw when I was there, realizing that I would never have the chance to go back again. The photographs are from Tehran, Shiraz, Esfahan, Yazd and smaller towns in between. Towns that I know, full of hearts and minds that will voice out their opposition on June 12, the anniversay of the re-election of Ahmadinejad. This film is for all of them. Iran is one of my favorite places. This is a photo I took of the capital Tehran right before the snow blanketed the city. I have not seen any news lately from Iran in the front pages of the newspapers but I am sure that would change on June 12, the anniversary of the the re-election of Ahmadinejad. The latest news is that Ahmadinejad has deployed about 2 million paramilitary into Tehran to thwart any protests, jailing activists.

I lost all my contacts for my Iran negatives. I am slowly scanning the negs, hoping to put together a visual memory of what I experienced. I will share this before June 12

Then and Now

I have this album that I shot and put together in 1978. I was 8 years old. When I look through the pictures I feel as though I remember every moment of that family trip to Yellowstone National Park. But I am not sure if I truly remember or if the pictures themselves create the memories. Thirty years later I revisited the park on a shoot for Sunset magazine. At some point following my return I pulled out my 1st album. There was something about the way I used the camera when I was 8 that I appreciated all of these years later. Something that came naturally. I believe it is imperfection. At 8 you don't care if your horizons are crooked, if your exposure is off, if the time of day is right or about the rule of thirds. You simply point the camera because you like it. My goal now is to unlearn so much of what I have been taught, or been told about photography. Knowledge, politics, responsibility, your editors, it all plays a part in the way in which you approach your subjects. But when you are 8 none of this exists. One similarity that I do recognize between then and now, is that the appreciation I shared for open space when I was 8, still exists in me today. - brown

THOUGHTS ON LOOKING AND SEEING

I have never blogged before and I felt lost for words this morning until Mia showed me an excerpt of writing by John Steinbeck that resonated with me. So, I will let Mr. Steinbeck's words start my first blog:

It occurs to me to wonder and to ask how much I see or am capable of seeing...

Some Years ago, the US Information Service paid the expenses of a famous and fine Italian Photographer to go to America and to take pictures of our country... The man had travelled everywhere in America, and do you know what his pictures were? Italy. In every American city, he had unconsciously sought and found Italy. The portraits--Italians; the countryside--Tuscany and the Po Valley and the Abruzzi. His eye looked for what was familiar to him and found it. This is interesting as an incident, but I think we all do it. This man did not see the America which is not like Italy, and there is very much that isn't. And I wonder what I have missed in the wonderful trip to the south [of Israel] i have just completed. Did I see only America? I confess I caught myself at it. Travelling over those breathtaking mountains and looking down at the shimmering deserts, cut to wadis by the occasional flash floods, I found myself saying or agreeing--yes, that's like the Texas panhandle--that could be Nevada, and that might be Death Valley. The frightening thought...is that they weren't andy of those places. They were themselves. But by identifying them with something I knew, was I not cutting myself off completely from the things I did not know, not seeing, not even recognizing, because I did not have the easy bridge of recognition?

This is a serious thing and it extends in many directions. Because we do not use quarter tones in music, many of us do not hear them in Oriental music. How many people, seeing a painting, automatically dislike it because it is not familiar? And, most important of all, how many ideas do we reject without a hearing simply because our experience pattern can bring up no recognition parallel?

I took the picture above of the kids playing in the ocean in the French Polynesia, along the coast of Raiatea Island...but the image could have been from anywhere. I realized that, like Steinbeck in his trip to Israel, I was guilty of seeking out the familiar.

The scene of the kids swimming in the water reminds me of my childhood in the Philippines. I could be any of those boys jumping in the water. In my search to find something different, I unconsciously found the familiar. Coconut plantations just like in my hometown, fishermen fixing their nets, families in the water, men gathered under the trees--these are the images I took. Granted that Raiatea Island, the whole French Polynesia has a lot of similarities to the Philippines, it is not.

But is that really bad thing?

Aren't we suppose to photograph who we are, to be personal. One's work should be a reflection of oneself.

But I think Steinbeck is talking about experiences. To be open to all of them, specially to the unfamiliar.

The danger is when we start dismissing experiences that we do not identify with and that would be death for a Photographer.

We also think of it as our journal and as a place to freely experiment and grow. Through exploration and observation we will continue to evolve and so will Intersection Photos.
